Saruj – Imagine there is no money anymore is a love story set in a future where there is neither money nor barter, neither borders nor governments, no police apparatus and no wars. A society striving for complete freedom.
Saruj (“empathy” in Sanskrit), 29, was born on the day money was abolished. She grew up in a communal living community in the Pyrenees, and has spent more than a third of her life travelling the world on foot as a nomad. She is an idealist and, in the story, represents freedom.
Kevalam (“alone” in Sanskrit) is the youngest son of a former ultra-wealthy man, Saman. The patriarch believed that once money lost its significance, a money-free society would only be short-lived. He therefore built a self-sufficient settlement for himself and his family, completely isolated from the rest of the world. His son was told that in the world “out there” there was nothing but violence and chaos.
The story begins when Saman dies. Kevalam, just eighteen years old, sees the outside world for the first time. Using his father’s aircraft, he leaves the settlement and soon causes an accident. This is how he meets Saruj.
Saruj is on her way to a Sannyasinii who, together with other mystics, is organising a pilgrimage through the German-speaking regions to energetically cleanse soils, lakes and buildings. Some of these mystics are over one hundred years old and are therefore living witnesses of the so-called “Transition”.
Kevalam decides to follow Saruj and join the pilgrimage. At first, he finds it difficult to accept that a world without money can function peacefully. He fears a loss of security and justice. In his view, both can only be guaranteed through money and control. With Saruj’s support and the patience of the Sannyasins, he gradually opens himself to this new society and discovers its beauty.
